  • US to build radar system along Russian-Norwegian border

    RBC reported on March 30th that the US will build a new military radar system in the Norwegian Vardø municipality on the border with Russia. The new military radar will be an upgraded model of the Globus II, which was installed in the late 1990s and is currently still in use. Work will begin in the summer of 2017 and will take about three years to complete. The US intends to spend 118 million to upgrade Globus II.

  • Police chief in Norwegian province asks government for power to close border with Russia

    The Head of the Police of Finnmark, Norway,  Helen Catherine Haetta, appealed to the government p grant the police the right to close the border with Russia.  

    “Memories of the autumn events are still fresh.  Because of this, one should consider the physical non-permanent closure of the border for a number of security reasons.  The Head of the Police of that region should have the authority to do that,” Haetta wrote in a letter to the government.

  • Norway to allocate 4 million euros for humanitarian aid to Ukraine

    Norway will allocate about 40 million kroner (more than 4 million euros) for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.  This was reported on the 8th of February by the press service of Norway’s government.

  • Lithuania to Import more Gas from Norway than Russia in 2016

    In 2016, Lithuania will import more gas from Norway than from Russia, as stated by the Minister of Energy of Lithuania, Rokas Masiulis, Reuters reports.

    Russian Gazprom enjoyed a monopoly on the Lithuanian gas market before the end of 2014, when Lithuania opened a floating liquefied gas terminal.  This allowed tankers from Norway to supply gas to Lithuania.

  • Ukraine to start producing 3D mine detectors in joint project with Norway

    Ukraine and Norway will begin a joint project that will see the production of 3D mine detectors to help the Ukrainian Armed Forces locate and disarm land mines in the war-torn Donbas region, according to the Acting Head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO, Egor Bozhok, in an interview with UNIAN.

    Norwegian authorities temporarily stopped the deportation of refugees that had come into the country from Russia, reported the Norwegian Foreign Ministry.
