Depending on situation in Syria, Iran may consider letting Russia use Hamadan airbase
Iranian Minister of Defense Hossein Dehghan stated that Teheran may again allow the Russian air force to use the Noje airbase in Hamadan, as reported by the Tasnim News agency.
“If the situation and conditions [in Syria] require our support, we will fulfill it,” stated Dehghan.
The chairman of the Russian Federation Council Defense and Security Committee, Victor Ozerov, said that Russia may need to use the airbase in Iran if the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is not close enough to Syrian shores and cannot be used by the Russian aircraft to conduct airstrikes against targets that are further inland.
The first time Russian air force used Hamadan airbase in Iran for strikes in Syria was in the middle of August. Shortly after that, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that all the aircraft from the Hamadan airbase had returned to their bases in Russia.
Later, the spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashenkov, stated that further use of the Hamadan airbase will be based on the mutual agreements between Russian and Iran and the situation in Syria.
Since the beginning of Russia’s Syrian campaign, the Russian Air Force has been using the Khmeimim airbase in Syria. In august, the Assad government allowed Russia to use this airbase indefinitely.
