Kyiv: Ukraine saved 2.7 million tons of coal after deliveries from separatist republics were suspended
Ukraine saved 2.7 million tons of A-grade coal as a result of emergency measures taken by the energy sector from February 17 to July 17, as reported by Volodymyr Kistion, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, at a meeting to discuss issues in Ukraine’s unified energy system.
“Today coal reserves in TPP and CHPP warehouses amount to 2,344,000 tons, including 1,477,000 tons of gas type coal and 867,000 tons of anthracite type coal. Preparations for the winter are going according to plan. There has been sufficient coal accumulated, so there is no need to extend emergency measures in the energy sector at this time,” the governmental press service quoted Kistion as saying.
He also stressed that the coal reserves decreased in July as scheduled repairs of nuclear power plant units take place over the summer, although the anthracite coal continues accumulating. “Summer is the second peak period where the Ukrainian energy system should work most efficiently. Now everything is going according to plan, not only in the accumulation of coal, but also in electricity production,” Kistion assured.
Emergency measures were introduced on February 17th due to the termination of anthracite coal supplies from the occupied territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. The government had extended emergency measured in the electricity market until July 17, after which they were canceled.
