Media: The EU could extend sanctions against Russia next week
The European Union member countries will decide on the extension of anti-Russian sanctions early next week.
According to a high-ranking EU official in Brussels, this will be done “in accordance with the proposal of the President of France, François Hollande, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.”
As was confirmed by TASS, citing a source in the German Government, sanctions will likely be extended immediately after the meeting. “If the leaders make this decision, it will be possible to extend the sanctions effective immediately,” he stated.
A Wall Street Journal reporter, Laurence Norman, also believes that European politicians will decide on the extension of sanctions next week. “Sanctions against the Russian Federation can be extended as early as Monday/Tuesday (19-20 December),” he wrote on Twitter referring to an anonymous source in Brussels.
“Until now, no one has raised concerns with respect to the proposal on the extension of Russian sanctions,” Norman added.
Yesterday in Berlin, Merkel and Holland stated that sanctions against the Russian Federation will probably be extended due to the situation in Ukraine.
