Russia tested state-of-the-art radio electronic weapon
According to Russia's RIA Novosti news agency, Russia has developed new types of radio-electronic weapons which are based on new physical principles and have no analogues in the world. The agency claims that this information was received from an official representative of the development company, United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (UIMC), during the ArmHiTec 2016 arms exhibition.
The first samples of the weapons were presented to the Ministry of Defense in September this year at a private exhibition that took place on the training grounds as a part of "Army 2016" military-technical forum.
“Real working samples of these weapons have already been built and they have proved their effectiveness. This is a completely new type of weapon. It has no analogues in the country and, we’re not afraid to say this, in the world,” the company representative said.
He went on to say that this new weapon is unique in that it will neutralize the enemy’s equipment without the traditional use of ammunition, but rather with the help of directed energy. “It applies an indirect physical effect to the on-board equipment of aircraft and UAVs, and neutralizes high-precision weapons,” he explained.
The chief editor of the National Defense Magazine, Igor Korotchenko, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that this new weapon may be adopted by the Russian Ministry of Defense in the future and may be used to disable drones.
“We are talking about a prototype, a principle of work which is probably based on the influence exerted by the powerful microwave impulses on the equipment of the enemy. Its goal is to disable their electronic equipment, which will then lead to a complete loss of functionality, and an inability to carry on combat operations,” Korotchenko said.
According to him, “the most promising way to use such weapons in combat would be to disable enemy drones directly over the battlefield given that this weapon is, apparently, capable of hitting targets at a distance of no more than one kilometer”.
Korotchenko added that if a prototype of a new weapon will meet the needs of the Russian Ministry of Defense, it can be further modified to comply with certain requirements and may then be adopted for use.
