The Kremlin has little hope of salvaging the truce in Syria
Moscow has almost no hope of restoring the truce in Syria. This was the view communicated in a statement made by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary for the Russian president, on Tuesday, September 20. He said that the hope of restoring a ceasefire in the Middle Eastern country “is very weak for now,” Interfax news agency reported.
Peskov said that he reached this opinion because of the offensive launched by Islamists in Syria the day before. “The offensive has started by the units of al-Nusra Front, who, as we know, actively used this week to replenish the arsenal of ammunition and to regroup. Because of this, we are extremely concerned,” Peskov said. “The situation in Syria is of great concern to us,” Reuters news agency quotes him as saying.
Peskov also said that Washington is jeopardizing the ceasefire. “We note with regret that during the period that has elapsed, namely a term that exceeded one week, our American colleagues have failed to distinguish the terrorists and so-called moderate opposition,” Peskov said.
The US State Department announced the revision of prospects for further cooperation with Russia because of the recent airstrike on the humanitarian convoy trying to bring aid for the residents of Urm al-Kubra. For now, it remains unknown whether the Russian or Syrian Air Force carried out the airstrike.
