PACE rejects plans to lift sanctions from Russia
Evropeyskaya Pravda reported that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Bureau rejected the proposal to postpone a review of the “Russian question” at the current session.
Another proposal consideration to amend the regulations should be conducted at this session. The main thesis of it is to make the renewal of sanctions against any member states as difficult as possible. These changes concern Russia, whose delegates will be able to return to work at PACE only after these implemented changes.
According to the deputies, it was suggested that PACE’s administration delegate the consideration of the sanction question to the Standing Committee, a governing body of PACE. The review of the Russian application at the Standing Committee would guarantee a decision in Russia’s favor.
“This proposal was made but met with fierce resistance,” said one of the interviewees. In addition, the deputies criticized Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland at the meeting, who transfer of the review process to the Standing Committee.
A few weeks ago, proposals were submitted to PACE to review the process of imposing further sanctions against Russia.
