Saakashvili says he will return to Ukraine in September
During a live broadcast on Facebook, former governor of Odessa Mikhail Saakashvili announced his intention to return to Ukraine in September.
"I will return to Ukraine. I will arrive on September 10 from Poland through the Krakovets checkpoint," he said. Saakashvili stressed that he plans to return in an exclusively legal way and does not intend to violate Ukraine’s current legislation.
Saakashvili also announced his intention to challenge in court the loss of his Ukrainian citizenship. He urged Ukrainian authorities not to turn his arrival into "another circus for Russian TV channels." He mentioned that several European countries had offered him citizenship.
On July 26, President Petro Poroshenko terminated Saakashvili’s Ukrainian citizenship. At that time, the former governor was in the United States. On August 4, he flew to Poland using his Ukrainian passport. On August 8, he went to Lithuania, and on Thursday, August 10, came from Lithuania to Hungary.
Saakashvili lost his Georgian citizenship at the end of 2015.
