US senators urge Trump to release security financing for Ukraine

A group of US Republican and Democrat senators have sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking his administration to allocate $250 million to security assistance for Ukraine, Senator Rob Portman announced on his website.

The Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative has been approved by US Congress, but the Trump Administration has not yet released the funds.

In their letter, the three Democrat and two Republican senators urged the presidential administration to release the funds that are “vital to the long term viability of the Ukrainian military”.

On August 29 it was reported that Donald Trump had asked his national security team to revise the security assistance program for Ukraine in order to ensure that the funds are being used in the US’s interests.

In the 2019 financial year, US legislators allocated $250 million to security assistance for Ukraine, including funds for weapons, training, equipment and intelligence support. Congress allocated $50 million to weaponry.
