Chief Editor of Rzeczpospolita: history should not spoil relations between Ukraine and Poland
At the eighth National Gorshenin Institute Expert Forum, Bogusław Chrabota, the Chief Editor of the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita said that he believes that the relations between Ukraine and Poland should be more pragmatic, and should not be overshadowed by their historical past.
"We have so many common interests, and we are destroying our relations and trust because of these lamentable facts. We should be more pragmatic, and not think only about history," the journalist said.
He recognized that historical thinking has a serious impact on current politics in Poland, but good social and institutional relations should not be sacrificed to the past.
The journalist recalled that there is presently a large population of Ukrainian labor migrants in Poland, and that their number is only likely to increase. He also pointed out that it was Poland, together with Sweden, that initiated the creation of the "Eastern Partnership" - a program of cooperation between the European Union and its eastern neighbors. Therefore, he believes that general policy will not change, and Poland will not deviate from the idea of supporting Ukrainian ambitions for European integration.
"We need to find a way how to cooperate together and find a common perception of history," said Chrabota.
