Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu discussed by telephone the fighting in southern Syria and Iran’s attempts to gain a foothold in the neighboring country, the press service of the head of the Israeli military department said.

The conversation took place amid clashes between government forces and the opposition in Syria, which are on the border of Israel and Jordan.

“Lieberman and Shoygu discussed the situation in Syria and, in particular, the events in the south of the country, as well as Iran’s attempts to gain a foothold in Syrian territory,” the press release said.

According to his press service, Lieberman reiterated that Iran’s military presence in Syria as well as that of its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah,is inadmissible.He promised that Israel would “act without delay” if they notice attempts by Iran to gain a foothold in the neighboring country.

“Lieberman once again stressed that the goal of Israel is to eliminate Iranian forces and Hezbollah from Syria.He also pointed out that Israel will act immediately when it sees the Iranians trying to strengthen their positions there,” the minister’s press service reported.

Lieberman met with Shoygu a month ago in Moscow. The main subject of their discussions was also the situation on the Syrian-Israeli-Jordanian border.
