Draft bill to recognize Holodomor as genocide against Ukrainian people submitted to US Congress
US Congressmen introduced a draft resolution in the House of Representatives on recognizing the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people, as announced on Tuesday by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Valeriy Chaly, Ukrinform reports.
"Today we, as the Embassy of Ukraine and the diplomatic service, promote this idea in different countries of the world, particularly in the US, so that a resolution on recognizing the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people will be adopted in Congress. The first steps have been taken and today such a resolution was introduced by Congressmen in the House of Representatives," the Ambassador stressed.
Chaly indicated that the co-sponsors of the draft resolution are Congressmen Sander Levin, Marcy Kaptur, Bryan Fitzpatrick, and Andy Harris.
"The resolution will be further considered and I think it will take several months, but hopefully next year, in the spring, there will be a vote in the US Congress," the diplomat added.
The ambassador also noted that the State Senates of Washington, New Jersey, and Oregon have already adopted resolutions that recognize the Holodomor as a genocide.
Earlier, the UK parliament called to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.
