Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko stated in an interview with TSN news program that after the presidential elections he will resign and return to “political activity”. Lutsenko said that he plans to get involved in politics sometime in May.

“You will see that I will have something to report on,” he said. According to him, during the presidential elections he will stay at his post and he will become a “serious guarantee” for the elections to happen on time and conform to the law.

The Prosecutor General noted that he would not participate in the work of campaign headquarters even though he got offers from President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. Lutsenko had no wish to dedicate part of his effort to procedures against Presidential candidates.

Lutsenko assured that criminal cases against presidential candidates would not be initiated to avoid hamstringing the candidates before elections. “Although I know that a few people dream of being examined because they can become the victim this way,” he explained.

Lutsenko is determined to deny them that. He stressed that he does not fabricate cases and does not initiate inquiries to discredit someone or to boost their ratings for political purposes.

Lutsenko has been actively involved in politics for more than a decade at least. He was a People’s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from 2002 to 2005. In 2006, he was the head of the People's Self-Defense movement and Our Ukraine People’s Self Defense bloc. In the same year Lutsenko became a parliamentarian of this bloc. 

In May 2013, he declared the creation of the non-partisan movement “Third Ukrainian Republic Initiative.” In late August 2014, Lutsenko was elected the leader of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc political party. In the same year, he became the head of the parliamentary faction of this bloc and became Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada. Lutsenko was appointed Prosecutor General in May 2016. 

The Presidential Elections in Ukraine are scheduled for March 31, 2019.
