Georgia condemns elections in LPR and DPR
Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the elections in the so-called Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics illegal. “Holding such illegal elections in the regions where Ukrainian authorities cannot exercise legitimate jurisdiction due to Russia’s effective control over them violates the basic rules and principles of international law and is a flagrant interference in the internal affairs of Ukraine,” the Ministry stated.
According to Tbilisi, “the elections contradict [Russia’s] obligations under the Minsk Agreements and hinder a peaceful settlement of the conflict.” Georgia unequivocally stated that it “strongly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine in its internationally recognized borders.”
“Elections" in the so-called DPR and LPR were held on November 11, despite the protests of Ukraine and the warnings of the international community.
Volodymyr Yelchenko, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, said that elections could become the starting point for new Russian armed aggression. Western countries have condemned the election in the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko expressed hope that new sanctions would be imposed against Russia because of these elections.
