Georgia severing diplomatic relations with Syria
In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia said that Georgian authorities officially started the procedure for severing diplomatic relations with Syria after the decision in Damascus to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The decision to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and establish diplomatic relations with them is considered by the Georgian Foreign Ministry to be a violation of international law and a demonstration of support for Russian aggression.
“Thus, the Syrian regime ignored the international legal obligation regarding the territorial integrity of a sovereign state and the inviolability of internationally recognized borders. Taking this into account, Georgia has begun the procedure for severing diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic,” the statement said.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry called on the international community to duly assess the actions of Damascus and respond to them accordingly.
As was reported, Syria recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on May 29.
