Ukraine calls on international community to increase pressure on Russia after Kremlin sentences four Crimean Tatars
In a statement published on the website of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry after the decision of the North Caucasian District Military Court of the Russian Federation, which sentenced four Ukrainian citizens on charges of terrorism, Ukraine called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia “to stop the violation of human rights” in the Crimea and to release Ukrainian prisoners.
According to Russian court, Enver Mamutov was sentenced to 17 years, and Rustem Abiltarov, Remzi Memetov and Zevri Abseitov were sentenced to 9 years in prison.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that this decision suggests that the anti-terrorism legislation in the Russian Federation is used "to hide political repression against representatives of the Crimean Tatar people."
"Ukraine will not silently watch this practice of the Russian Federation and will use all possible political and diplomatic levers to free the Ukrainian citizens," the department said.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry calls on Russia to fully comply with the resolutions of the UN General Assembly on the Crimea of December 19, 2016, December 19, 2017 and December 22, 2018, as well as the order of the UN International Court of Justice on the application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, adopted under the claim of Ukraine against the Russian Federation.
