Biden calls on Poroshenko to fix political crisis in Ukraine

US Vice President Joe Biden reminded the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, about the critical importance of creating a stable government and parliamentary coalition in his country during a telephone conversation with the Ukrainian leader on March 22nd, 2016.

According to a White House report on the conversation, the stabilization of the Ukrainian political system is the main condition for the successful implementation of the necessary reforms in Ukraine.

In addition, Biden and Poroshenko also discussed the verdict passed by the Russian court regarding Nadiya Savchenko. Biden assured Poroshenko that the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, will announce the official position of Washington to immediately release Savchenko at an upcoming meeting with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow.

The political crisis in Ukraine erupted on the 16th of February, 2016 when the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) failed to dismiss the government of the Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk. For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada could not ratify a resignation initiated by the President.
