President of Lithuania expects Gazprom to compensate for damage to consumers
Gazprom should compensate for the damage caused to consumers because of the opaque gas trade, said Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite.
At a meeting with Vice President of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic, who is responsible for the energy union, Dalia Grybauskaite stressed that in the fight against Gazprom's “opaque monopoly” in the European gas market, “not symbolic steps, but real solutions are needed,” reported news agency Delfi.
“There should not be differences in the EU in gas prices based on geopolitical motives, and Gazprom's obligations to buyers should include a mechanism for compensation for the damage caused by the opaque trade,” a press release from the president noted, which was distributed after the meeting.
In Lithuania, it was estimated that due to the “dishonest” pricing of Gazprom, the country suffered a loss of about 1.5 billion euros. However, the measures offered by Gazprom do not include compensating Lithuania for these losses, the press release said.
