Kremlin: Putin and Trump want to meet at G20 summit
The Presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, have held telephone talks, the Kremlin press service reported.
The leaders of the two countries discussed the prospects for coordinating the actions of Russia and the United States in the fight against terrorism in Syria, as well as "thoroughly discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula."
It is noted that Putin called for restraint and a reduction in the level of tension. The presidents agreed to "establish joint work aimed at diplomatic solutions for a comprehensive resolution of the problem."
Putin and Trump agreed to maintain contact by phone and spoke in favor of meeting in person at the G20 summit, which will be held July 7-8 in Hamburg.
Additionally, the heads of state agreed to intensify the dialogue between the heads of foreign affairs agencies in search of options for solving the Syrian crisis.
"It means that the Russian Foreign Minister and the U.S. Secretary of State will promptly inform the leaders about the progress achieved in this direction," the Kremlin explained. This should create the prerequisites for the launch of a real settlement in Syria.
According to the press service of the Russian president, the conversation "was of a businesslike and constructive nature."
The White House called the conversation between the presidents "very good."
According to the American side, the leaders discussed the creation of "safe zones of de-escalation" to achieve lasting peace in Syria, the fight against terrorism "throughout the Middle East" and "how best to resolve the very dangerous situation in North Korea."
The conversation between Putin and Trump was the third since the inauguration of the American president.
The first talks took place at the end of January, when the leaders discussed the fight against terrorism, the situation in Syria and Ukraine, as well as the main issues of bilateral relations. Also in early April, Trump called Putin to express his condolences in connection with the terrorist attack in St. Petersburg.
