Russia's mission to the UN: Moscow is ready to work with any partner to settle war in Syria
Russia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations stated that Moscow is ready to work with any partner, including the United States, on a settlement to the war in Syria, according to a statement on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, RIA Novosti reported.
“Russia is open to the continuation of cooperation with partners, including the United States, in all aspects of the settlement of the Syrian crisis. However, such cooperation can be carried out solely on the basis of equality and with the principle of a responsible attitude to their obligations,” the statement read.
“Russia is committed to overcoming the problems of military-political conflict in the SAR [Syrian Arab Republic], the cessation of violence and the suffering of the civilian population,” the statement noted.
Russia’s mission to the UN also stated that several of the opposition groups that are supported by the U.S. “discredit the American list, in principle,” as such rebels are considered to be terrorists by Moscow and Damascus.
Previous attempts at a U.S.-Russian backed ceasefire in Syria have not been successful. One such agreement in September lasted barely a week when the U.S.-led coalition carried out an airstrike on Syrian government troops near Deir el-Zor, killing more than 60 Syrian soldiers. Washington insists that the attack was accidental. Several days later, a UN humanitarian convoy was bombed outside Aleppo. The U.S. blamed the attack on Russia and the Syrian government, effectively severing any hope of salvaging the ceasefire.
