White House says Russia is responsible for finding a diplomatic resolution in Syria
Russia has a special responsibility to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Syria, as stated by the White House representative, Josh Earnest, on Wednesday December 7th, Reuters reported.
According to Earnest, Russia has a special role in the settlement of the Syrian conflict, as it stands on the side of the Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Moreover, Russia is interested in resolving the Syrian conflict, as it is itself seeking a way out of the situation in Syria, a White House representative said.
He explained that the United States aims to exert pressure on Russia because the tactic Russia is using in Syria is resulting in significant civilian casualties. Commenting on statements made by the leaders of the six Western countries on the need for a ceasefire in Aleppo, the White House representative said there is a need for the development of a single concrete diplomatic proposal on this matter.
Earlier in the day, a joint statement from Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, USA and France addressed to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was released, which called for the punishment of those responsible for human rights violations and war crimes in Syria. The statement condemns the actions of the Syrian regime and its foreign supporters, turning the attention to Russia.
