Ukrainian Ambassador to the US criticizes Trump for his stance towards Russia
The Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Valeriy Chaly, said that the statements of the Republican Party nominee for President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding Ukraine and the Crimea have caused considerable concern in Kyiv.
In the article in The Hill newspaper, Chaly emphasized that Trump sends the wrong signal to the world by his statements which call for the violation of international law. The Ambassador also noted that Trump’s statements run counter to the platform of the Republican Party that he represents.
“Even if Trump’s statements are only speculations and they don’t reflect future foreign policy, they call for reconciliation with an aggressor country and support the violation of the territorial integrity of sovereign states and international law. In the eyes of the world, such comments aren’t commensurate with the image of the country that is seen as strong advocate for democracy and international order,” the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States wrote.
Donald Trump stated that the majority of Crimean residents made the choice in Russia’s favor and that the United States should bear that in mind. Trump also commented on the need to ease the platform of the Republican Party on policy issues concerning Ukrainian-Russian relations. In addition, Donald Trump accused Barack Obama of creating the current situation in Ukraine and also noted that the U.S. needs to have stronger connections with Russia
