UN: The number of victims in the Donbas has risen sharply
The number of people who suffered from hostilities in eastern Ukraine during the last two months is comparable to the number of killed and wounded in April 2015 during fierce fighting in the region.
The number of civilians affected by the hostilities in eastern Ukraine has increased rapidly in the past two months. In June, according to UN data, 12 people were killed in this region and 57 were wounded. This was reported on Wednesday, August 3rd, in Geneva by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.
In July, the number of victims rose to 73 people: 8 of them were killed, 65 wounded. During May, this number increased twice compared with the previous month. The last time a similar number of dead and wounded in eastern Ukraine was registered was in August 2015, notes the KNA agency.
The UN Commissioner for Human Rights has once again appealed to the warring parties, urging them to take steps to resolve the situation in the east of Ukraine. Civilians are increasingly forced to hide in makeshift shelters and basements, often staying there for the night, according to the UN report. Besides the casualty rate an "escalation of hostilities" is a major cause of concern for the organization.
