'Given the threat', Poland does not want to resume a small border crossing with Russia

Poland does not want to resume a small border crossing with Russia in the Kaliningrad region "given the threat posed by Russian politics", as stated by the Polish Minister of the Interior, Mariusz Błaszczak, reports Polish Radio.

"The small border crossing with Russia in the Kaliningrad region, given the politics of this country, has still not been restored," said the Minister.

In addition to the above, he added that it is because of Russia’s behavior that NATO troops are located in Poland.

Last summer, in connection with the NATO summit in Warsaw and the World Youth Days in Krakow, Poland suspended a small border crossing with Ukraine and Russia. Subsequently, the crossing with Ukraine was restored; however the crossing with the Kaliningrad region has remained closed.

According to Minister Błaszczak, the small border crossing with the Kaliningrad region has not been restored, "given the threat associated with Russian politics."

"If the situation changes, we may restore the small border crossing," Błaszczak promised.

The report indicates that last year, Vice-Minister Sebastian Chwalek stressed that "information collected by Polish Special Services indicates a security threat, and [Russia’s] actions could result in the destabilization of Poland, as it did in other countries of the region." He also added, "an example of the above could be the actions of Russia in Ukraine on the eve of the annexation of the Crimea."
