Russian Ambassador to the US: At the next meeting Trump and Putin will discuss Syria and North Korea
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit where they could discuss the fight against terrorism and conflicts in Syria and North Korea, as stated by Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, RIA Novosti reports.
According to Antonov, "You don't have to be a politician or a diplomat to understand that the main problem is the fight against international terrorism." Antonov believes that the leaders of the two countries can also discuss "how to make it so that people in Syria can start living peacefully, when the political process begins, how to accelerate it."
According to the ambassador, the issue of meeting various groups of the Syrian opposition might also be raised during the meeting between Trump and Putin. "Well, while staying in Asia, it's clear what other problems there are. There is the problem of the DPRK," the diplomat stressed.
"I believe that contacts between leaders are always useful. If the leaders sit down together and talk, they can have a very broad agenda for discussion," Antonov added. He related that there are positive expectations for the upcoming meeting of the two leaders.
Earlier, Trump expressed his hope for a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the APEC summit, which will be held from November 6 to 11 in Vietnam's Da Nang. He noted that the United States needed Russia's assistance in resolving the conflict on the Korean peninsula.
During an interview on Fox News on November 3, the US president stressed the importance of the upcoming meeting with his Russian counterpart. A spokesman for Russian President Dmitry Peskov said on November 4 that Putin and Trump should discuss the situation in Syria during the meeting.
