Russian Foreign Minister complains about U.S. reluctance to cooperate on cybersecurity
Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, in an interview with the newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets, spoke about the United States refusal to cooperate on cybersecurity issues.
According to Lavrov, after Washington accused Moscow of interfering in the United States presidential elections, Russian diplomats asked their U.S counterparts to provide the evidence of such interference to them.
He stated that in both Russia and the United States, “there is such organization as the Nuclear Risk Reduction Center.” The Russian side suggested using its communication channels to exchange the evidence. Lavrov stressed that "this is a trustworthy and professional channel," however, the accusations by the US remained unjustified.
“They refused our proposal. We have repeated our suggestion few more times. The correspondence on cyber threats from Russia, hacking and other things continued from September 2016 to January 2017, throughout the last period of Barack Obama’s administration,” said Lavrov.
According to Lavrov, Russia offered the United States to publish this correspondence, “so that people know how we responded to all this.”
“They refused. We, being decent guys, could not do it alone, but warned them that we will tell about the very fact of their refusal to publish this correspondence,” Lavrov added.
