Ukraine detains former head of the Central Election Commission of Donetsk People's Republic
The Prosecutor General's office and the Security Service of Ukraine detained the former head of the Central Election Commission of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Roman Lyagin, reported Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko on his Facebook page.
He recalled that in 2014 the detainee organized and held a referendum in the DPR. "Citizen Lyagin is charged with treason against the country. Now he will have to pay for his actions," the Prosecutor General said.
In May 2014, referendums on the status of regions were held in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and as a result, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republic were established.
Roman Lyagin claimed that the main idea of the referendum was to show the right of the region to self-determination. "We will not cease to be part of Ukraine, we will not become part of Russia, we just want to say to the world that we want to see changes," he noted.
