Ukraine intends to demand UN recognize Russia as sponsor of terrorism
Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine for European Integration Olena Zerkal wrote on her Facebook page that Ukraine plans to submit a memorandum on Russia's violation of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism to the International Court of Justice.
“The fact that everybody knew why Russia used its veto at the UN Security Council in 2015 and blocked the creation of a tribunal to investigate the circumstances of the crash of the MH17 flight has been proven today," Zerkal commented on the findings of the Joint Investigative Group on the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 plane crash over the Donbas in summer 2014. The Group discovered evidence of involvement by Russian armed forces in the airplane crash.
"The transportation by the 53rd anti-aircraft brigade of the Russian Federation's Armed Forces of the Buk used to shoot down MH17 is direct evidence of Russia's supply of weapons used to down a civilian aircraft, a violation of the 1971 Montreal Convention and the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism. This is what we will prove and substantiate in our memorandum, which we will submit to the International Court of Justice on June 12," Zerkal assured.
The Joint Investigative Team (JIT) researching the May 24 disaster investigation announced the involvement of the Russian armed forces in the airplane crash. According to the experts, the Boeing was shot down by a Russian Buk air defense missile system directed toward the territory of Ukraine from the 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade base in Kursk Oblast. The missile that destroyed the aircraft was manufactured in 1986 at the Dolgoprudnenskoe Scientific Production Plant. The JIT representatives also came to the conclusion that the missile system was transferred to Russia the day after the disaster.
