Ukraine to reduce the number of checkpoints in Donbas

Konstantin Bushuev, Deputy Chairman of the National Police of Ukraine, announced that the checkpoint system in Donetsk and Luhansk will be changed as part of the Joint Forces Operation in Eastern Ukraine (JFO), Interfax-Ukraine reports.

The changes to the checkpoint system are primarily aimed at reducing the social tensions. The current verification process at the checkpoints does not meet the national security requirements.

Bushuev stated: “Their numbers will be reduced, and the verification procedures at checkpoints will be adjusted in accordance with the JFO command’s decision.”

According to the Deputy Chairman, police functions in the Joint Forces Operation zone will remain unchanged. The police will continue to prevent entry of people into the Ukraine-controlled territory who intend to destabilize the situation. Members of illegal armed groups will also be deterred from entering the region.
