Volker: US waiting for Zelensky’s promised reforms
During a broadcast of the Ukrainian TV Channel Pryamoi , US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker said that the US is waiting for Ukraine to form a new government and implement the declared intentions before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visits Washington.
“The US government will gladly support the initiatives which Mr Zelensky announced during his election campaign and which are being voiced today, as the government is being formed. These are the promises to continue reforms and fight corruption, the intentions to continue de-oligarchization, and the announced path to come closer to the EU and NATO. We also highly value the statements that Ukraine will fulfill its commitments to bring about peace. We are very supportive of all of it,” said Volker.
According to Volker, Zelensky has not yet had an opportunity to implement his initiatives, because the new parliament has not yet begun to operate. “It will happen in the next few weeks, and then we’ll see what kind of government is formed, who will be prime minister, who will head the foreign ministry. We also want to work closely with the new team on the implementation of all the declared intentions and initiatives,” added the US special representative.
“And we would like it if, when President Zelensky visits the White House, we could talk about what the Ukrainian government has achieved, and about our achievements in bilateral cooperation,” said Volker.
He also remarked that no specific date for a visit by Zelensky to the US has been set. “Both presidents are expected at the commemorative events in Warsaw, and so it’s possible that they’ll meet and talk there, but we are still working on dates for a visit to the White House,” said Volker.
