Medvedev: The West imposes sanctions that go against international law

The Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, stated during the International Legal Forum in Saint Petersburg that Russian companies have been subjected to pressure due to the sanctions imposed by number of countries against the Russian Federation over the last two years, as reported by a Rosbalt correspondent.

“There are attempts to push sanctions forward across the world contrary to agreements and international law. Our companies have been subjected to this pressure for two years. What kind of respect for the law are we talking about? To be honest, the question of how our partners are going to find their way out of this situation remains open,” the Prime Minister noted.

“Why? Because it is always easier to violate than observe. However, the West will bear not only legal but also historical responsibility for this,” Dmitry Medvedev summarized. Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated in connection with the situation in Ukraine.

In late July 2014, the European Union and the U.S.A. passed targeted sanctions against separate individuals and companies in addition to sanctions against whole sectors of the Russian economy.

In response, Russia has limited the import of food products from countries that imposed sanctions against it. In June 2015, Russia has extended the food embargo until the 5th of August 2016 in response to extension of sanctions.
