Chinese company signed a contract to repair two highways in Ukraine
Ukravtodor, the State Agency for Automobile Roads of Ukraine has signed contracts with the Chinese Xinjiang Communications Construction Group for the repair of two roads in Ukraine.
Ukravtodor’s website notes that for the first time in the history of Ukraine, a Chinese company will repair roads. The contracts were part of a project between Ukraine and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The first contract provides for repair works on the M-12 road from Holoskiv village in Khmelnitsky region to the border between Khmelnitsky and Vinnytsia regions, from the 291st to the 332nd kilometers. The contract is for 18 months and costs 38.5 million dollars including VAT. The work is scheduled to begin in early 2018.
The second contract provides for the reconstruction and major repairs of the M-03 highway on the linear sections from Lubny to Poltava, from the 210th to the 333rd kilometers. The contract is for 8 months and costs 57.3 million dollars including VAT. The approximate starting date is also the beginning of 2018.
One of these projects is part of the Gо Highway transnational corridor while the other is an important transport corridor for communication between the two largest cities of the country, Kyiv and Kharkiv.
Xinjiang Communications Construction Group Co., Ltd. is controlled and regulated by the State Commission for Assets Supervision and Management of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. The company specializes in the development of transport infrastructure, design, construction and operation of roads and bridges, tunnel works.
China is not the first foreign company contracted to do road work. The Turkish company Onur has been carrying out road repair works in Ukraine for quite a long time.
