European Parliament may call for boycott of World Cup in Russia
Deputies of the European Parliament are going to introduce a resolution, related to human rights in Russia, for a diplomatic boycott of the World Cup by officials of EU countries. The tournament will soon start in Moscow.
This was reported by Rikard Jozwiak, Brussels correspondent for Radio Liberty.
“The European Parliament is likely to call for a diplomatic boycott of the 2018 World Cup in a resolution on human rights in Russia that is set to pass on 14 June,” the reporter wrote on Twitter. He did not name his source.
Previously, officials from four countries participating in the World Cup spoke about a boycott.
In March, British Prime Minister Theresa May said that members of the royal family and British ministers would not travel to Russia because of the poisoning of former Russian intelligence officer Sergey Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury. Iceland supported the diplomatic boycott in a show of solidarity. Later, President of Poland Andrzej Duda announced his decision not to attend the opening ceremony of the championship.
On June 7, members of the Australian government decided not to attend.
In April, 46 deputies of the European Parliament signed an appeal to boycott the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
