Georgia awaits Kyiv's decision on extradition of Saakashvili
Interfax-Ukraine reported on Saturday, January 20 that the Georgian Prosecutor's Office has sent all necessary materials for the extradition of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to its Ukrainian counterpart, and now awaits a final response from Kyiv. This was announced by Natia Songulashvili, a Prosecutor with the General Prosecutor's Office and a member of the Prosecutor's Council of Georgia.
"The Prosecution has enough evidence, which, we believe, should be the basis for a positive decision on the issue of his extradition," she said.
According to Songulashvili, the prosecutor's office is now in waiting mode, and, in particular, waiting for a final decision from the Ukrainian side.
"We, as Prosecutors, have sent all possible evidence to establish a legal framework for this decision," she said.
As you know, Saakashvili has been accused by Georgia of exceeding his official powers and squandering public funds in especially large quantities. The former president of Georgia believes that all the charges against him are politically motivated.
The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia earlier said that they expect Ukraine to take concrete steps to extradite Saakashvili.
