Islamists in Syria captured third new Russian T-90 tank
Islamist militants in Syria have already captured the third, newest Russian T-90 tank, as reported by a group of investigators, the Conflict Intelligence Team, via its Facebook page.
"The propagandists of the so-called 'Islamic state' published a photograph of the T-90 captured from pro-Assad forces, to whom it had been sent from Russia. The researchers reported that the militants took advantage of a sandstorm near Mayadin, southeast of Deir ez-Zor, to capture the tank during a counterattack. Judging by the signature in the photo, the 'Islamic State' mistakenly identified the tank they captured as a T-72. This is the third known case when a Russian T-90 is in the hands of Assad's opponents," the report says.
It is noted that in 2016, during the fighting in the province of Aleppo, one T-90 went to the Islamist group Nour al-Din al-Zenki as well as terrorists of the Al-Nusra Front.
"Both tanks subsequently fell into the hands of Nusra, now known as Tahrir al-Sham. During the recent offensive by Assad's opponents in the province of Hama, one of them was captured by the pro-Assad forces, and the other was destroyed," the report says.
In September 2015, it was reported that the US had detected Russian tanks in Syria. They documented about seven T-90 tanks at an airfield near Latakia.
