Latvia expressed support for Ukrainian law on education
The Minister of Education and Science of Latvia, Kārlis Šadurskis, said Ukraine’s decision regarding the language issue in the context of the new law on education is understandable, according to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
"The steps taken by Ukraine to ensure students learn the State language as part of their educational system are understandable," Šadurskis said in Riga during a meeting with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Pavlo Klimkin.
The Latvian Minister, using his country as an example, stressed the importance of creating a system that supports youth in learning a state language. According to Šadurskis, this helps to avoid discrimination in the labor market.
According to the report, during the meeting, Klimkin acquainted the Latvian Minister with the main provisions of the Law of Ukraine "On Education." The sides also signed an intergovernmental agreement in the fields of education, science, youth, and sports.
On September 28th the Ukrainian law "On Education" came into effect. It provides for a 12-year education in state schools and the increase of the use and instruction in the Ukrainian language.
The document has caused sharp criticism by some countries, in particular, Hungary and Romania.
In Russia, it was called "an act of the ethnocide of the Russian people in Ukraine."
