Serbia will soon receive MiG-29 fighters and other weapons from Russia
On the 12th of February, the Minister of Defense of Serbia, Zoran Đorđević, stated that Belgrade will soon receive a batch of Russian military aircraft. According to him, six Russian MiG-29 fighter jets will arrive in Serbia in the near future. The Russian Federation will also send its experts to modernize the Serbian Air Forces, whose aircrafts were mostly purchased from the reserves of the Russian Air Force.
“The MiG-29 fighter jets will be equipped with modern weapons, radars, optics, and communication systems,” the Serbian Minister of Defense said. In addition, the Serbs intend to purchase 30 Russian tanks and 30 armored personnel carriers.
Serbia is also negotiating the purchase of eight more MiG-29 fighter jets and air defense systems. This was announced after the meeting between Đorđević and the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Alexander Fomin. The meeting was held on the 11th of February in Moscow.
“During the meeting, the Ministers summarized the results of the bilateral military cooperation for 2016 and identified prospective areas of cooperation between the Russian and Serbian Armed Forces for 2017,” the Russian Defense Ministry reported, emphasizing that particular attention was paid to Russian-Serbian relations in the military-technical area.
Meanwhile, Serbia’s neighboring country, Montenegro, is completing its requirements for NATO membership. Furthermore, NATO member State, Croatia, expressed its intention to purchase 16 U.S. multiple-launch rocket systems and tactical missiles with a firing range of up to 300 kilometers.
