Bundestag Deputy: Germany should abandon Nord Stream II

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag and member of the Christian Democratic Union, Norbert Röttgen, stated in his commentary to RND that Germany should refuse to participate in implementing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which Russia wants to lay on the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

“The Federal Government should give up its stated position that the Nord Stream 2 is not a political project but purely business,” Röttgen said. “Poland, the Baltic States and Ukraine believe that this pipeline project poses a threat to their security. The Federal Government should take these concerns into account.”

Röttgen added that the project is wrong from an energy and foreign policy point of view because it runs counter to all the general principles of energy and foreign policy of the European Union.

As previously reported, the Presidents of the Visegrad Group expressed opposition during the summit in Rzeszów to construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Nord Stream 2 is a project that was agreed to by Russian Gazprom and several European energy companies last year.

Like the current Nord Stream pipeline from Russia to Germany, according to the Russian plan Nord Stream 2 should also run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Some EU countries are against implementation of this investment, noting that it will mean the reduction of energy security for the European community.
