Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament: Russia should be deprived of its veto right on Ukrainian issues in the UN
Chairman of Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy said that it is necessary to deprive the Russian delegation to the UN Security Council of the right of veto in matters relating to Ukraine.
"Now, when the Russian aggression is under way, Ukraine desperately needs a strong and efficient UN. I am convinced that Russia should be deprived of the right of veto on issues that concern Ukraine," the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament said at a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is currently visiting Kyiv.
There are five permanent members on the UN Security Council: the United Kingdom, China, the United States, France and lastly, Russia, which has the right to veto any decision that it perceives as directed against it, and in fact does so frequently. In particular, Russia repeatedly used the right of veto when considering Ukrainian issues.
Ukraine, which is now a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, has repeatedly called for reform of the UN Security Council to eliminate abuses of the veto by permanent members.
On July 9, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and discussed with him the situation in the annexed Crimea and the Donbas.
