Dzhemilev: Turkey Supports International Effort to Return Crimea to Ukraine
The Minister of External Affairs of Turkey, Mevlut Cavusoglu, supports the creation of an international group that will work on freeing the Crimea from Russian occupation.
This initiative was requested by Ukraine and was discussed in Strasbourg at a meeting between the Turkish Foreign Minister and the Commissioner of the President of Ukraine on the Affairs of Crimean Tatars, Mustafa Dzhemilev, on January 26th.
According to Dzhemilev's Facebook page, the meeting was also attended by Ukrainian Deputy and member of the Ukrainian delegation to the PACE, Georgy Lohvinsky, as well as Dzhemilev's adviser and the delegate of Kurultai of Crimean Tatars, Rustem Umerov.
During the meeting a proposal to establish a special international group to “work closely on the issue of freeing Crimea from occupation," was discussed.
Dzhemilev offered to create an international group that will include the countries that participated in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum as well as Turkey as an influential Black Sea country. This idea was already supported by the President of Ukraine and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
Cavusoglu also supports such an initiative. "This issue will be discussed in detail this February when the head of the MFA of Ukraine comes to Ankara," the statement said.
