Kremlin: We do not unconditionally support Assad
Dmitry Peskov, the Press Secretary for Russian President, has said that Kremlin support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not unconditional, reports AP.
The previous day, the U.S. State Department said that it is time for Russia to reconsider its support of Assad, due to the chemical attack in Syria. It was reported today that U.S. President Donald Trump has set sights on war against Assad.
"Unconditional support is impossible in this world," he said.
The Kremlin added that it “is wrong to say that Russia can persuade Assad to do what Moscow wants."
"This is completely wrong," said Peskov.
At the same time, he stressed that Moscow and Damascus have "full mutual support," and that Assad and his troops are "the only real force in Syria that can counter the terrorists on the ground."
According to him, the Kremlin is waiting for a full-fledged international investigation of the terrorist attack before the UN Security Council passes any resolutions condemning the chemical attack.
That said, he described the chemical attack in Idlib as "very tragic."
Russia has stated that the video of the chemical attack in Syria is staged. Moscow has also claimed that the Syrian government air fleet bombed the rebel warehouse with poisonous gas.
