Mingarelli: EU has not changed its position on fighting corruption in Ukraine
The position of the European Union on the need to combat corruption in Ukraine remains unchanged, stated the head of the EU Delegation in Ukraine, Hugues Mingarelli, at a meeting with Ukrainian deputies and civil society representatives, according to the Facebook page of the EU Delegation.
The Ambassador made assurances that the EU's position on combating corruption, which should be accelerated and intensified, had not been changed.
"The EU has closely followed the process of creating the proper judicial instruments for legal proceedings for corruption offenses, in accordance with Ukrainian law on the judicial system and the status of judges that was adopted last year. We further stress the need to create an independent, effective judicial body with the necessary powers and necessary resources to fight against corruption. We call for a transparent and independent process for the creation of this body and the selection of specialized judges," Mingarelli said.
In early September, a round table will be held on next steps in the establishment of appropriate institutions aimed at bringing corrupt officials to justice.
Following the results of the Ukraine-EU summit, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the European Union had agreed to create an anti-corruption chamber in Ukraine, instead of creating a separate court.
The EU then explained that Junker was in favor of creating the necessary bodies to fight corruption in Ukraine and did not disaffirm the creation of a separate anti-corruption court, while supporting a special anti-corruption chamber within the existing judicial system.
