Russia drafts new Syrian constitution

Russian specialists have prepared a draft of the new constitution for Syria, as stated by the special representative of the Russian President on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev.

Lavrentiev stated that the draft constitution was given to the Syrian armed opposition for study. BBC reports that Russia is waiting for their reaction.

"I wish to particularly emphasize: we did it solely for the reason that we want to speed up this process and to give some additional stimulating impetus without intruding into the process of consideration itself and adoption of the constitution," Lavrentiev said.

On January 23 and 24, negotiations on the situation on Syria were held in Astana. As a result of the meeting, Iran, Russia and Turkey agreed to create a tripartite mechanism of monitoring the ceasefire regime in the country.

The next round of the negotiations has been already announced, which will also be held in Astana. The United States insists on negotiations in Geneva.

Representatives of insurgents and the government of Syria participated in the Astana negotiations. It was the first time that a delegation from the Syrian opposition was formed solely of representatives of armed groups. However, there were no direct negotiations between the belligerent parties.

Later, representatives of the opposition stated that they were not satisfied with the results of the meeting.

The stated objective of the negotiations in the capital of Kazakhstan was the strengthening of the ceasefire, which was reached last month with the mediation of Turkey and Russia. Both parties of the conflict still accuse each other of violating the ceasefire.
