Russia initiates legal proceedings against Right Sector leaders
The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case against the leaders of Ukraine’s Right Sector.
According to the committee’s website, a criminal case has been filed against Dmitry Yarosh and several other members and former members of the Ukrainian nationalist organization.
The case has been initiated under part 1 of article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which addresses extremist activities.
"In the period... from 2014 to the present, leaders and activists of the organization Right Sector permanently and systematically planned and committed crimes against the Russian Federation, its citizens and diplomatic missions in Ukraine, as well as against the Russian-speaking civilian population,” the Russian Investigative Committee stated.
On September 18th, members of the Right Sector attempted to block the entrance to the Russian Consulate in Odessa to stop people from voting in the State Duma elections.
In November of 2014, the Russian Supreme Court labelled the Right Sector an extremist organization and banned its activities in the Russian Federation.
