Russia presents its own draft resolution on chemical attack in Syria
At the UN Security Council, Russia presented its own draft resolution to investigate the chemical attack in Syria. Russia’s permanent representative to the UN made a statement to this effect, RIA Novosti reports.
“We put forward our own short, thorough draft, aimed at a real investigation, not at assigning guilt before the facts have been established,” said Fedor Strzhizhovsky, press secretary of Russia’s permanent representative to the UN.
According to him, consultations regarding the draft are taking place.
“The next round will take place a bit later, as soon as the compromise draft is ready,” the diplomat added.
Earlier at the Security Council, the US, France and Great Britain introduced a draft resolution condemning the use of chemical weapons in Idlib and making a number of demands of the Syrian authorities, in particular, to provide UN and the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) with access to the military airbases.
On April 4 in the Syrian Idlib province there was an air attack which made use of chemical weapons. At least 100 people were killed and a further 400 were poisoned.
Russia has put forward its own theory on the developments in Idlib. According to Moscow, the Syrian government forces bombed a military warehouse containing landmines with toxic substances.
