Russian Parliament has prepared a bill on the burial of Lenin's body

The State Duma of Russia has prepared a bill that proposes a "legal mechanism" for the reburial of the remains of Vladimir Lenin.

This was reported by Russia’s Interfax news agency, citing Vladimir Sysoev, one of the initiators of the bill and an MP from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR). According to him, the document has already been submitted to the lower house.

The bill proposes amendments to the current law on funeral and burial, the deputy noted. "Our bill contains a legal mechanism for the reburial of the remains of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. The order and time, as well as the place of burial, should be established by the government, based on the decision of an interdepartmental commission," said LDPR member Sysoev.

He added that the idea for the initiative came to him and his colleagues after the results of a poll by the Levada Center, which showed that most Russians want Lenin to be buried. The survey showed that only 31% of Russians want to leave Lenin's body in the Mausoleum on Red Square. 32% of respondents suggest burying him at the Kremlin wall, while another 26% at Volkovskoe cemetery in St. Petersburg.

April 22 will mark the 147th anniversary of the birth of Lenin.

In April 2016, the Russian authorities allocated almost $200 thousand for the preservation of Lenin's body.

After Lenin's death, Lenin's body was embalmed, and in 1924 was placed in the Mausoleum on Red Square in Moscow. The mausoleum is open for  public. Access to the Mausoleum and to the burial places near the Kremlin wall is carried out through a checkpoint at the St. Nicholas (Nikolskaya) Tower, where metal detector checks are conducted.
