Saudi Arabia accuses Russia and Syria of violating ceasefire
The Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adel Al-Jubeir, has accused Moscow and Damascus of carrying out airstrikes which violate the conditions of the truce in Syria. According to Reuters, the diplomat stated that the Saudi authorities are currently discussing this issue with other countries.
Adel Al-Jubeir also reported that if the Syrian authorities and their allies aren’t serious about observing the truce, plan B will be activated. Meanwhile, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs didn’t give specific details in support of his claims.
“I think that observance of the truce is an important indicator of their seriousness about achieving a peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis that will include the creation of transitional authorities and also the transfer of power from Bashar Al-Assad to the Council,” he noted. The Minister of Foreign Affairs stated again that there is no place for the Syrian leader, Bashar Al-Assad, in Syria.
On the 26th of February, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution supporting the cessation of hostilities in Syria. The draft document was prepared by Russia and the U.S.A. In accordance with the resolution, a truce has been in effect since midnight, February 27th, Damascus time.
The agreement implies that military actions will be continued only in relation to the Islamic State (prohibited in Russia) and other terrorist organizations as specified by the UN Security Council.
