SBU: Cyber attack on Ukraine was planned in advance

On June 27, several Ukrainian banks, as well as some private and public sectors companies were subjected to an external hacker attack which used a then-unknown virus. However, the press center of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) now says it was a previously known but modified ransom ware, which is currently being studied.

"At present, SBU specialists, together with the State Special Communications Service of Ukraine, the department of Cyber Police, representatives of anti-virus companies, study samples of malicious software and work out ways to neutralize them. In the near future, the recommendations on protection from the above-mentioned cyber-attacks will be created and provided," the special service's website reported.

According to preliminary estimates, the infection was planned in advance and occurred in several stages.

The SBU noted that a large-scale cyber-attack on Tuesday, June 27 was directed against critical information infrastructure facilities of energy-generating and energy-supplying companies, transport facilities, a number of banking institutions and telecommunications companies. Many private business entities also suffered.
