The Pentagon will continue to help build up the capacity of the Ukrainian army
According to official departmental representative Courtney Hillson, the Pentagon will continue to provide strong support to the armed forces of Ukraine, helping them build capacity. The announcement comes after a meeting on Wednesday in Washington between U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Work and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.
Hillson said that the sides discussed "support that the U.S. provides to Ukraine in the sphere of security, aimed at upgrading the domestic defense capabilities and professionalism of the Armed Forces of Ukraine".
Work, a Pentagon spokesman said, also called on Kyiv to carry out reforms that would improve the efficiency of Ukrainian defense enterprises. In turn, Klimkin said that Ukraine is committed to the Minsk agreements.
In late December, outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama approved a law on military appropriations, which provides for a gradual allocation of $350 million to Ukraine for military needs.
In 2014, Washington allocated a total of $600 million to Ukraine for equipment, advisory support and assistance for training programs.
