Ukraine has received $1.85 million in aid from Japan since 2014

Since 2014 Ukraine has received $1.85 billion in assistance from Japan, and these funds were allocated both for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other areas not associated with defense and security sectors, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

"Despite the fact that our countries are far from each other, relations between Ukraine and Japan is an example of building effective relations. We look forward to the further development and deepening of Ukrainian-Japanese relations," Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Stepan Poltorak, said during talks with the Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, Sumi Shigeki.

Poltorak presented Shigeki with the departmental badge of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense "Badge of Honor." The Defense Attaché at the Japanese Embassy in Ukraine, Akihiro Hara, who also attended the meeting, was awarded a medal "for assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces".

The press service of Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that "overall, from 2014 onwards, according to the Japanese Embassy, the aid to Ukraine from Japan amounted to $1.85 billion".

"It is not just military aid, it is help from Japan in general. Those funds are issued for various programs. For example, to improve the economic situation in Ukraine, as financial assistance to medical institutions and as funds allocated to deal with internally displaced persons," the Ukrainian Defense Ministry clarified.
